WHAT ARE REQUIREMENTS/PROCEDURE TO LEGALLY PROTECT INDICATIONS OF GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN?

Legal protection of indications of geographical origin is exercised in an administrative procedure by an administrative authority competent for intellectual property affairs (the Intellectual Property Office).

The procedure to register names of origin, i.e. geographical indications is instituted with appropriate application.

Important parts of the application for origin name, i.e. geographical indications are:

1) request to register origin name, i.e. geographical indications;
2) description of a geographical region;
3) information on specific product characteristics.
